Abstract

Blunt abdominal trauma is a frequent occurrence in the setting of emergency trauma management as a result of high-energy impact due to either automotive accidents or falls. The management of these patients depends on the severity and the mechanism of injury, the organs invovled, the systemic impact on the patient, as well as their hemodynamic status. The most commonly involved organs are the liver and the spleen. Recent trends in less aggressive treatment modalities have made surgical intervention less applicable.

Details of the mechanism of trauma, the injury classification according to severity, and the various treatment options are discussed in this chapter, with special reference to recent advances concerning conservative management options.
