Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

Abstract

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) presents a paradigm shift in perioperative care for an expanding range of surgical procedures. ERAS, also known as fast-track surgery or enhanced recovery program (ERP), was initially developed in academic institutions in Northern Europe. Over the last two decades, it has matured from a primarily European approach to perioperative care to an international evidence-based program to improve patient care. Today, ERAS is a constantly evolving field of medicine and is increasingly embraced by the global surgical community.

This chapter discusses how ERAS, initially popularized by Professor Henrik Kehlet, transitioned from academia to standard clinical care, as promoted by the initial founders of the ERAS® Society. The nature of ERAS in the global surgical community is described in a narrative fashion in both developed and developing nations. This chapter highlights the global collaboration efforts as well as the future of ERAS internationally.
