Abstract
Most newborns in Dutch neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) die after a medical end-of-life decision is made. Research in the last few decades has focussed mainly on decision-making in neonatal units and not on provision of palliative care. However, practice and research have changed after the introduction of the concept of neonatal palliative care a few years ago. A multidisciplinary palliative care plan is now used, which includes advance care planning, symptom management and parental education and family support. In addition, a multidisciplinary team checklist based on a needs analysis among parents whose baby died on NICU was created in addition to developing the care concept: “What parents need”.
