Abstract

In order to understand the effect of the floating conductors between series-connected composite insulators, the first step is to study air gap discharge with the existence of floating conductors. In this paper, the discharge process and breakdown characteristics of rod-rod gaps with floating conductors in atmospheric air under AC voltage were investigated experimentally and discussed on the basis of observation of discharge path and field calculation. From the experiment, the breakdown voltage is affected by the position of the conductor and increases obviously with increasing rod diameter. The floating conductor with large diameter placed in the middle of the gap tends to increase the breakdown voltage. For air gaps longer than 1 m, the inserted floating conductors can cause the change of the discharge form from leader to streamer and further change breakdown voltage. These experimental results can help understand the discharge mechanism of combined air gaps with floating conductors and design series-connected composite insulators with specific fitting size and series connection types.
