Abstract

Colitis is mucosal inflammation of the colon that may be caused by infection, inflammation, ischemia, medications, or other idiopathic etiologies. The most common symptoms of colitis are diarrhea (which may be bloody) and abdominal pain. While infectious colitis and inflammatory bowel disease are the most common types of colitis, it is important to recognize, test for, and treat noninfectious and noninflammatory colitis, which includes microscopic colitis, drug-induced colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behçet’s colitis. We provide a review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatments for the eight types of noninfectious, noninflammatory colitis listed above.
