Atlas of Dermatological Manifestations in Gastrointestinal Disease

Geriatric Gastroenterology

Abstract

Dermatologists closely assess the skin for primary disease; however cutaneous manifestations of underlying systemic disorders are also of great clinical significance. Such findings offer clinicians visible clues to pathological disorders affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) system, otherwise imperceptible without more invasive investigation. Due to the close embryologic origins of the skin and the GI system, GI disorders frequently manifest concomitant dermatologic features. Dermatologic findings can occur before or concurrently with systemic disease and may aid in accelerating diagnosis of underlying GI disorders. This atlas will provide figures of common manifestations with brief descriptions to highlight the mucocutaneous manifestations of GI disorders in older adults, focusing on GI cancers, paraneoplastic syndromes associated with GI malignancies, inflammatory bowel disorders, vascular disorders, genodermatoses, nutritional deficiencies, and medication-related adverse events.
