Abstract

The field of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has transitioned from being merely diagnostic to replacing conventional surgical procedures. The advancement in electronics and the progress in nanotechnology have resulted in trail breaking developments that will transform the way diagnosis and treatment are currently carried out. The use and demand for robotic medical and surgical platforms are increasing as new technologies are continually being developed. The future is very attractive, the potential is enormous, and the science fiction movies depicting robots replacing humankind may soon become a reality in our endoscopic practice. In this chapter, we review the state of the art and the future direction of robotic endoscopic techniques for the treatment of GI lesions.
