Abstract

This chapter will begin with a brief summary of the history of physical activity epidemiology followed by a description of conceptual definitions and the multidimensional aspects of physical activity. The global prevalence of physical activity and sedentary behavior as well as trends over time will be presented for adults and adolescents and an overview of previous and present physical activity recommendations will be provided. A further aim of the current chapter is to present methods for the measurement of physical activity. A detailed overview of self-report and objective or device-based measurement techniques will be given and advantages and disadvantages as well as areas of application will be presented for each method. Common study designs and methodological considerations in physical activity epidemiology will be discussed and, finally, areas of potential future development in physical activity epidemiology will be reviewed.
