The LIPID MAPS consortium has developed a comprehensive classification system for lipids (Fahy et al. 2005, 2009). The lipid species are placed into lipid categories, main classes, and subclasses as detailed chemical structures including stereochemistry. Typically, mass spectrometric analysis does not provide the structural details covered by the LIPID MAPS nomenclature. Therefore in 2013, a system for “Shorthand Notation for Lipid Structures Derived from Mass Spectrometry” (Liebisch et al. 2013) has been proposed by mass spectrometrists within the European “LipidomicNet” project (http://www.lipidomicnet.org). This proposal builds upon the LIPID MAPS terminology and aims to add defined levels related to the structural information provided by mass spectrometric analysis for major fatty acids/acyls (FA), glycerolipids (GL), glycerophospholipids (GP), sphingolipids (SP), and sterols (ST).
