Definition

Sediment dynamics refers to the motion of sediment particles during their formation, transport, and settling processes.

Introduction

Sediment dynamics is an interdisciplinary research field integrating the knowledge of physical oceanography, geology, biology, and chemistry. Since centuries ago, it has been a subject of study for geologists and engineers. Many different theories and formulas have been developed to describe the motion of sediment particles during their formation, transport, and settling. Some of the approaches have been applied widely to solve engineering and environmental problems, and some still remain on a theoretical level. Since most of the existing formulas describing sediment dynamics are derived empirically, results obtained from different approaches often differ drastically from each other even though they are based on the same initial conditions (Yang, 1996).
