Family: Cactaceae        Ornamental

Rattail cactus necrosis-associated virus        (RCNaV)

Taxonomic position

Genus: Tobamovirus        Family: Virgaviridae

Geographical distribution

RCNaV infection in plants of Aporcactus flagelliformis was reported from Korea (Kim et al. 2012).

Symptoms and host(s)

The virus-infected rattail cactus plants exhibit necrosis symptoms.

Transmission

The virus is mechanically sap-transmissible and produced necrotic local lesions on Gomphrena globosa, Chenopodium amaranticolor, C. quinoa, Datura stramonium, Nicotiana benthamiana, and N. rustica. Systemic necrosis symptoms were produced on Nicotiana benthamiana. The virus is also transmissible by contact between plants. There is no known vector for this virus.

Virion properties and genome

The virions are rod shaped and 18 nm in diameter and have a predominant length of 300–310 nm. The genome is a monopartite, linear, positive-sense ssRNA of 6,506 nt and contained four open reading frames coding for proteins of M(r) 128 kDa...
