Zusammenfassung
Die Diskussion um die Digitalisierung des Films ist in der Filmtheorie seit den späten 1990er-Jahren vor allem als Debatte über den Verlust der Indexikalität des Films, und damit des wesentlichen Distinktionsmerkmals filmischer und fotografischer Medien geführt worden. Erst in jüngerer Zeit ist die Frage nach den spezifischen Ausdruckspotenzialen des digitalen Bildes und damit nach den Möglichkeiten einer ästhetischen Erneuerung des Kinos im Zeichen des Digitalen und den sich daraus für die Filmtheorie ergebenden Konsequenzen in den Vordergrund gerückt.

Bei Jan Simons, der eine solch pragmatistische Position vertritt, wird dies deutlich, wenn er behauptet, dass es keinen Einfluss auf die Art eines Textes habe, ob dieser mit einer altmodischen Schreibmaschine oder einem Laptop geschrieben würde (Simons 1999, S. 120). Er widerspricht damit sehr direkt der zum Beispiel von Friedrich Kittler vertretenen Position, die dieser wiederholt mit dem prägnanten Nietzsche-Zitat, nach dem unser Schreibzeug mit an unseren Gedanken arbeite, zum Ausdruck gebracht hat (Nietzsche 2002, S. 18 und hierzu Kittler 1987, S. 202). Eine ebenfalls auf den Gebrauchskontext zielende, pragmatistische bzw. instrumentalistische Position vertritt Minnis 1998, vgl. hierzu auch Brown 2014, S. 141–142.
