Definition
An interpolation flap is constructed from donor tissue not immediately adjacent to the defect being repaired and contains its own inherent blood supply. The flap is based on a vascular pedicle contained within a bridge of intact skin and soft tissue, spanning across the surgical defect and the flap base. It is typically performed in two stages, the first stage consists of transposing donor tissue with the vascular pedicle to the defect, while the second stage involves division of the vascular pedicle from the donor site (Jewett 2009).
Purpose
In the head and neck region, interpolation flaps are most commonly used for reconstruction of facial soft tissue defects, especially in the nose and perinasal regions (see also Acquired Nasal Deformity and Reconstruction, Flaps, Classification of Flaps).
