Named in honor of the brothers Edward Charles Pickering (1846–1919), director of Harvard Observatory, and William Henry Pickering (1858–1930), director of Arequipa {see planet (737)} Observatory and discoverer (1898) of the ninth satellite of Saturn. (H 78)
The Pickerings are also honored by craters on the Moon and on Mars. See also the remarks to planet (1052).
