Named in memory of the Czech student of philosophy Jan Palach, who burned himself to death on 1969 Jan. 16 in Wenceslas Square, Prague, as a protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia the previous August, resulting in the violent end of the reform movement known as Prague Spring. (M 18643)
