Abstract

Hydrocephalus in pediatric population is an entity that has been the focus of many studies. Hydrocephalus in children may occur due to a multiple number of causes and if left untreated has a lethal outcome. Postinfective hydrocephalus (PIH) may be defined as hydrocephalus associated with infectious etiology is mostly associated with meningitis. Common causes of PIH include tuberculosis meningitis, neurocysticercosis, and pyogenic meningitis. Various CSF diversion procedures used in PIH include: External ventricular drain, ventricular shunt (ventriculoperitoneal, ventriculoatrial and ventriculopleural), lumboperitoneal shunt and endoscopic third ventriculostomy. We will discuss various etiologies, pathogenesis of hydrocephalous and treatment options in this chapter.
