Abstract

This chapter aims to study how salafi-jihadism became the dominant, if not the only, ideology of armed struggle in the post-Cold War era. It also studies conditions that make salafi-jihadi movements survive and thrive, in spite of successive defeats. It will also study structural conditions within the movement that constantly pushes towards further radicalization and spectacular violence. The chapter argues that those conditions that make the strength of the movement are also, paradoxically, its weaknesses.
