Definition

Blue nevi are benign acquired melanocytic lesions characterized by the presence of distinctive pigmented dermal dendritic melanocytes. The morphological spectrum includes common blue nevi and its most significant variants cellular blue nevus, plaque-type blue nevus, and epithelioid blue nevus.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    No precise data regarding incidence are available but “common” blue nevi are not infrequently encountered. The variants of blue nevus as described below are significantly less common. Epithelioid blue nevi may arise sporadic or in association with Carney complex.

  • Age

    Blue nevi can present at any age including at birth. Adolescents and young adults are predominantly affected.

  • Sex

    There is an approximately twofold female predilection.

  • Site
