Ahnfeltia plicata – is a species of red alga in the family Ahnfeltiaceae, which occurs in the northern parts of the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, also in the Arctic. Salinity of 12 ‰ and higher is required for growth of this seaweed. The fronds are reddish-black and grow up to 25 cm long. The life span of the White Sea population is 9–13 years. The species may form dense tangled turfs, up to 20 cm in width. Some species of this seaweed are harvested for agar production. Ahnfeltia plicata is widely distributed off the coast of the White Sea, especially, in Dvina Bay, Onega Bay, and Kandalaksha Gulf.
