Definition
Macroautophagy (referred to hereafter simply as autophagy) is an evolutionarily conserved homeostatic mechanism involving the formation of autophagosomes that sequester cytoplasmic macromolecules and organelles before fusing with the endo-/lysosomal compartment. Accumulating evidence indicates that the autophagy pathway influences the inflammation process at several different levels. More importantly, deficiencies of the autophagy pathway or autophagy proteins are reportedly involved in several inflammatory disorders – underscoring the key role of autophagy in inflammation responses.
