Introduction

Educational ethics, understood both as an area of scholarly inquiry and a subject taught in university- and college-based teacher training, has a history that is very distinct from the way ethics emerged as a concern in recent decades in classical professions like medicine and law. According to the standard narrative, starting in the 1960s, a decline in public trust towards traditional authorities fueled a demand for greater accountability among the professions. Confronted with a new situation in which public trust could no longer be taken for granted, the professions responded by introducing more stringent and transparent mechanisms to regulate professional conduct. These mechanisms included enhanced ethical codes, formal disciplinary committees, and mandatory training in ethics.
