Definition of the Subject and Its Importance
Linear Fresnel Collectors are a subgroup of linear concentrating collectors . They use linear receivers and reflectors, which are segmented in single axis tracking heliostats. The reflector segments are typically aligned horizontally and track the sun such that the receiver is illuminated without need to be moved (see Fig. 1).

Abbreviations
- Dish:
-
Short for point focusing concentrator with circular paraboloid reflector.
- Heliostat:
-
The reflecting device that is positioned such that it reflects the direct sun light to the receiver.
- IAM:
-
Incident angle modifier: optical efficiency at a certain angle of incidence in relation to the optical efficiency at normal incidence.
- Longitudinal:
-
Parallel to the direction of the receiver.
- Longitudinal IAM:
-
IAM for incident rays with no transversal component.
- Receiver:
-
The device, usually a tube or a bundle of tubes, that absorbs solar radiation and transfers it to useful heat.
- Reflector:
-
Here sometimes used synonymously with “mirror” or “heliostat”.
- Tower:
-
Here used as a short form for solar power tower or central receiver system.
- Transversal:
-
Perpendicular to the direction of the receiver and parallel to the aperture.
- Transversal IAM:
-
IAM for incident rays with no longitudinal component.
- Trough:
-
Linear concentrating collector with parabolic reflector trough.
