Definition

Data access . A process through which users discover and acquire data. In the context of this encyclopedia, data refers to remote sensing data or ancillary or supportive data needed to utilize remote sensing data. Data access is part of the process of acquiring and managing digital data from remotely sensed sources. These processes are collectively considered part of ground data processing systems.

Historical perspective

Data access goes hand in hand with the launch of research and operational satellites in the 1960s. Access in the early 1970s consisted of provision of data to a limited user base most typically as hardcopy photographs or photographic film. Digital data were delivered on nine-track magnetic tapes, and analysis products were often line printer outputs (Swain and Phillips, 1973).
