Definition
Adherens junctions are intercellular junctional structures, most prominent in epithelial cells. In the adherens junction, the cell-cell adhesion is mediated by Ca2+-dependent cell adhesion molecules, the cadherins; the cytoplasmic tail of these cadherins is indirectly linked to the actin cytoskeleton.
