12.1.1 Introduction

The Mediterranean coast of Egypt is about 950 km long. The coastal climate is warm temperate arid with some winter rainfall: Alexandria has a mean monthly temperature of 14.4° C in January, rising to 26.1° C in July, and an average annual rainfall of 178 mm. From the boundary of the Gaza Strip in the east to the Libyan border in the west the Mediterranean coast of Egypt is generally low-lying and fringed by sandy beaches, except to the west of the Arab Gulf (Khalig el 'Arab) where there are some limestone and sandstone cliffs. Winds and waves are the major factors influencing shore processes.
