It is not often that acclaim can be given to a person in a field that is not actually his discipline of choice. Such is the case of George Lyon Tupman.
Tupman was educated at the Royal Naval School of New Cross. He then joined the Royal Marine Artillery as a Second Lieutenant. By the time he retired in 1880, he had become a Lieutenant Colonel. Tupman married Rebecca Wetherill in 1876.
From his youth, Tupman was interested in observational astronomy. He was originally noted for a publication on the radiants of meteor showers, written at quite a young age. He then tried to estimate the velocities of meteors through the atmosphere. In addition to his interest in astronomy, Tupman dabbled in geology, the invisible world of the microscope, archaeology, and natural history. He even grasped the new technology of the wireless; he had a station in his home. The Postmaster-General removed it in 1914.
