Definition
Service oriented architectures (SOAs) are models of distributed software components where business or scientific functions are delivered by a network of distributed services. Services can be classified into atomic services and composed services, based on how they are created and run. Atomic services are those that do not depend on other services for their operation, and are typically built on technologies native to a specific platform, such as COBOL or Enterprise Java Beans. Composed services are created by composing the function provided by one or more external services into a new service. There is no restriction implied as to the programming model used to create composed services; platform specific programming models such as Enterprise Java Beans or C# have been extended to support the creation of composed services.
