Abstract
Manual medicine (MM) and osteopathic medicine (OM) have a large area of overlap, especially concerning parietal osteopathy. If one does not take the repeatedly appearing aspects of philosophy and ideology into consideration, but relies exclusively on the facts of basic scientific research, OM does not represent a new or even superior kind of “medicine”. This article emphasizes especially the differences concerning visceral and craniosacral techniques with a review of the existing data. There is further need for methodologically high quality studies to improve the recognition of OM by university medicine.
