Introduction to the Supplement
The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) has developed a journal supplement for Cancer Causes & Control themed around addressing cancer health equity, building community capacity, and engaging partners for optimum cancer prevention and control. The objectives of this supplement are to: (1) highlight a diversity of collaborative products focused on themes that have emanated from substantial investments in the network by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) over our 20-year history, and (2) advance the science of implementation by contributing new methods and findings that can build community-academic partnerships and enhance capacity to implement evidence-based interventions to improve cancer outcomes going forward.
Members of the CPCRN have contributed original research articles, brief reports, commentaries and reviews that extend the knowledge base of dissemination and implementation in cancer prevention and control through estimating population impact of evidence-based interventions, considering methodological challenges and innovations in reducing cancer disparities in medically underserved populations, such as rural residents, developing measures and outcomes for evidence-based cancer control research, and developing partnerships with diverse healthcare systems and networks. The supplement features practical and feasible solutions applied to persistent cancer-related problems in communities, including outcome disparities, with a focus on engaging a diversity of stakeholders’ voices in the research and translation effort, including patients and caregivers, community organizations, healthcare providers and systems (e.g., FQHCs, county health departments), payers, and state and national decision makers.
