In 2001, the Swedish mining industry, communities and the county authorities of northern Sweden and the ministry of industry together established an organization called Georange, partly funded by the EU (target 1), in order to support a sustainable mining and exploration industry in northern Sweden. Four of the five projects reported here as individual papers have been fully or partly funded by Georange, which has supported many international cooperative research projects besides the ones reported here.
