Abstract

Ethnic differences in the pathology of breast cancer were extensively discussed. Much emphasis was placed on the need for the standardisation of pathological criteria in comparative studies. Age-specific incidence rates for postmenopausal breast cancer still show considerable differences between racial groups; high in Caucasians, low in Japanese. Time trend analyses show that the rates for localised andin situ cancer have increased sharply due to the introduction of mammographic screening. It was pointed out that the study of precursor lesions is important and that precise examination of autopsy material has shown a higher than expected incidence of atypical hyperplasia andin situ carcinoma in Japanese women.
