Abstract

A weathered piece of basaltic rock from Lindsay's Nunatak, Greenland has been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The reddish weathering products near cracks in the stone contain maghemite, magnetite and goethite. In the thin reddish-brown rind no well-crystallized Fe(III)-oxides could be detected.
