Summary
The persistence and strength of the katabatic winds of Adélie Land and King George V Land of the Antarctic are caused by the big temperature difference between the air over the ice cap and the neighbouring open sea. On days with strong insolation over the ice cap the temperature difference becomes during the afternoon hours small. The marked lulls in the gales from the ice cap occur generally at these times, particularly in December when insolation and heating of the surface air over the ice cap are at a maximum.
