Abstract
According to epidemiological research on causes of death (CODs) in Japan, deaths due to tobacco smoking and deaths due to high blood pressure are the most common, occupying the number 1 and 2 positions by a wide margin [1]. Both of these CODs have preventable causes: it is possible to quit smoking, and in most cases, high blood pressure can be treated by alterations in lifestyle and/or with pharmaceuticals. We must devote our efforts to reducing these preventable deaths, and proper engagement with cessation support is key.
