Definition
Social science research on higher education politics, policies, systems, and institutions as well as internal groups and individuals such as academics, administrators, students, and stakeholders in the five Nordic countries.
Introduction
Higher education (HE) research is a relatively new research field in all the Nordic countries, mainly built up since the 1960s. In spite of the many similarities among the five countries such as relatively easily accessible and universal free public HE provision, high participation rates, and a high level of investment in research, their research effort in the field of HE demonstrates interesting differences in terms of patterns of organization and policy, research themes, and disciplinary composition (Kogan et al. 2006).
In order to delimit the HE research effort in the five countries, this article focuses on three different characteristics:
