Abstract

Of the geographical distribution and the ecological conditions of birds living in the antarctic region a large amount of interesting knowledge has been collected piece-meal by a great number of antarctic explorers, all of whom deserve the deepest homage and acknowledgement for their courage and perseverance. But at least an equally large amount of in formation on distribution and life habits remains to be gathered and the number of problems of general zoological and ecological interest that has come to light is absorbing. Therefore in the following pages only the great lines of the distribution and the ecology of birds in the Antarctic will be described, as understood to-day. The present introductory remarks are supposed to give a summary of the kind of problems met in antarctic ornithology.
