Structural Analysis of Coal Derivatives

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 244))

Abstract

Methods for the structural analysis of coal extracts and liquefaction products are described. The required analytical data includes elemental molecular mass, functional group and 1H and l3C nmr analyses. If 13C nmr is not used, assumptions must be made concerning aliphatic H/C ratios which may lead to errors. Additional analyses may be incorporated in least-squares minimization schemes. The structural scheme is useful for highlighting differences between coal extracts, but gives no information on the distribution of structures about the average; complementary analysis by voltammetric methods allows aromatic groups to be identified, while XPS gives information on nitrogen functionality. Variations in average structure with molecular mass must also be taken into account.
