Abstract
The exchange between Menzies (1949) and Huntsman (1938) about Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) life history in the sea generated many useful ideas. Menzies hypothesised that salmon migrate far out into the North Atlantic and would be found feeding in the area of the Irminger Sea. Huntsman proposed the opposite hypothesis that salmon remain near the mouth of the river from which they originated. The answer to these opposing ideas finally came with the beginning of deep-sea fisheries off Greenland and in the Norwegian Sea where salmon tagged as smolts in North America and Europe have been recaptured. Since then Templeman (1967, 1968), May (1973), Lear (1976), Reddin (1985) and Reddin and Shearer (1987) have demonstrated that salmon are distributed seasonally over much of the Northwest Atlantic and thereby make lengthy migrations far from their rivers of origin.
