Abstract

The accumulated chemical data from high grade terranes indicate that granulites are commonly depleted in sialic and LIL components with respect to amphibolites. We report uniquely field controlled data from a major West Greenland shear zone in which the same chemical differences have developed between deformed and undeformed quartzo-feld-spathic gneisses: it appears that K, Si, Rb and water have been added during deformation while Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, and Sr were removed. We suggest a model of chemical mobility in which the mechanism is bidirectional, vertical diffusion through a fluid phase. The ultimate driving gradient appears to be the temperature gradient.
