Abstract

MAYAK is a nuclear facility established by the Former Soviet Union for the production of plutonium for military purposes. It is located 55°44’N 60°54’E, 70 km north of Cheliabinsk and 15 km east of the city of Kyshtym in the southern Urals. MAYAK covers an area of 90 km2 and was operated by the former Ministry of Nuclear Power of the USSR. (At present Ministry of Atomic Energy of Russia).

The Joint International Group consists presently (1995) of the following laboratories: Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology (IPAE, Russia), Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (IBSS, Ukraine), National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB, UK) and Rise National Laboratory (RISØ, Denmark). The project is economically supported by INTAS (contract No. 94–1221).
