Summary

Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is a treatment modality for localized small-volume (less than 5 cm in diameter) renal cell carcinoma, in which the kidney is laparoscopically removed together with the adrenal gland, perirenal tissue, and Gerota’s fascia en bloc. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy has been proven to be minimally invasive to the patient, since the dosage of analgesics in the early postoperative period is minimal, the hospital stay is shorter and recovery to normal activity is earlier in patient who have undergone this procedure. A shorter hospital stay decreases the direct medical cost, and the earlier convalescence avoids the economic loss arising from morbidity. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is a technically established procedure except for the removal of the dissected specimen from the working space and the prolonged operating time. At the present time, kidneys with a large-size (5–8 cm in diameter) renal cell carcinoma can be removed by this procedure. However, the long-term prognosis of the patient treated with this procedure is still unknown, although the early prognosis is equal or superior to that with traditional open radical nephrectomy. Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy will probably become a standard treatment modality for localized renal cell carcinoma.
