Abstract

This article is dedicated to the notorious water supply crisis in Cape Town in 2018. After a short review of the historical development of the water supply since the first Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope, the article first describes the extent of the disaster, then analyses the comments in the media and discusses the role of the disciplines involved in crisis planning. Furthermore, future planning is presented and the extent to which the proposed solutions are ethically justifiable is examined. Finally, three theses on the ethical behaviour of engineers in crisis situations are formulated.
