Die Arktis besteht überwiegend aus Seegebiet. Ihre Entdeckung und Kartierung dauerte mehrere Jahrhunderte. Acht Staaten sind geografisch arktisch, jedoch nur fünf von ihnen haben als Küstenstaaten des Nordpolarmeeres direkten Zugang zur zentralen Arktisregion.
