Abstract

The world’s largest land-locked ocean, the Arctic, occupies a broad elliptical basin, covering an area of about 12 million km2 and containing 13 million km3 of water. Although it constitutes over 3% of the world’s ocean area, the Arctic holds only 1% of its volume; this is accounted for by the broad continental shelves which underlie almost 70% of its area (Beal, 1969).
