Abstract

Carefully designed, controlled clinical trials conducted by the National Wilms Tumor Study (NWTS) committee have refined the indications for adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the management of Wilms tumor (WT) patients. Fewer patients now require radiotherapy and those that do, need a smaller dose than was historically given. At the same time, treatment outcome has improved. Reduction in therapy duration, intensity, and dose holds the promise of fewer late effects of decreased severity. Despite the reduced requirement for radiotherapy, the radiation oncologist remains an essential member of the management team. The purpose of this chapter is to review the clinical science that the radiation oncologist will require in the current management of patients with WT.
