The Foraging Zones of Seabirds in the Crozet Islands Sector of the Southern Ocean

  • Conference paper
Antarctic Nutrient Cycles and Food Webs

Summary

This paper deals with the foraging zones of seabirds in the Crozet Islands sector of the southwestern Indian Ocean. Data were collected at sea by means of 10-min counts. Habitat partitioning is described among foraging seabirds in February, when almost 80% of the species are feeding their chicks. Seasonal change in habitat utilization and partitioning is analyzed. The influence of hydrography, distance from breeding locality, marine productivity and seasonal vertical migration of zooplankton on the distribution of seabirds is discussed.
