Abstract
The areas selected for sampling by Norwegian and Finnish IBP are described elsewhere (Sonesson et al, 1975). The Finnish sites are also discussed in Kärenlampi (1972), with maps of the distribution of trees and bushes at the Kevo subsites. All the sample areas are placed in a pattern analysis diagram of the direct gradient analysis (Karenlampi and Kauhanen, 1972). Production estimates are given by Karenlampi (1973). The production and total biomass of the Norwegian alpine lichen heath and the understory vegetation of the willow thicket and the sub-alpine birch forest are reported by Wielgolaski and Kjelvik (1973); values for bushes and trees are given by Kjelvik (1972; 1973). The biomass estimation method is similar in the two countries (Wielgolaski and Kjelvik, 1972).
