Abstract
Risk assessments provide the foundation of a scientifically sound and defensible method of evaluating the impacts of contaminants on both the biotic and abiotic components of an environment. The procedure involves identifying a hazard, examining the relationship between a contamination event and determining its effects on humans and the environment. Field studies, laboratory tests and models are all used to quantify the magnitudes and probabilities of effects. The information is then used to make decisions on how to balance acceptable risks against the costs of risk reduction (Paustenbach 1989).
