The Permian of Northern Pangea

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the present knowledge of the depositional history of the Permian basins in the area between NE Greenland and the mid-North Sea High (Fig. 1). The review will be biased in favour of the Permian of East Greenland. There the Permian is well exposed and fairly well understood due to numerous studies by people associated with the Geological Survey of Greenland and to investigations performed in conjunction with hydrocarbon exploration by ARCO Int. (e.g., Piasecki 1984; Surlyk et al. 1984, 1986; Scholle et al. 1990, 1991; Piasecki and Stemmerik 1991; Stemmerik 1991; Stemmerik et al. 1993a, b; Christiansen et al. 1993). In contrast, the Permian is poorly known in the offshore areas between Norway and Greenland, and it is not until one reaches the northern Permian Basin of NW Europe that data become better and well information is available (e.g., Taylor 1981, 1984; Glennie 1984).
