Abstract

There are many problems involved in the classification and staging of laryngeal carcinoma. Some of these problems concern the exact delineation of the different laryngeal regions, that was highlighted at the Centennial Conference on Laryngeal Cancer in Toronto, 1974. Long discussions led to a definition of the glottic region to include the free margins and the horizontal surfaces of the vocal cords and the commissures. The lower lateral angle of the ventricles was considered the border between the glottic and supraglottic regions. The sub-surface of the vocal cords is a part of the subglottis (Fig. 1). Correct classification requires a detailed mapping of these parts of the cords. In the classification of small glottic lesions laryngography furnishes the most reliable mapping of the tumour and enables even a slight involvement of the sub-surface of the vocal cord to be assessed (Olofsson and Sökjer 1977).
